Correct an issued invoice with a credit or debit note
Returns, later discounts and extra charges — without changing the original invoice.
Updated October 23, 2026
An issued invoice cannot be edited or deleted — that is a ZATCA rule. To correct it:
- Credit note: lowers the amount (returned goods, a discount after the sale, a price that was too high, a cancelled service).
- Debit note: raises the amount (a forgotten line, a price that was too low).
Create a credit note
- Open the original invoice from Sales → Invoices.
- Press Create credit note. The lines are copied from the invoice.
- Keep only the lines to correct and change the quantity or price (for example: 2 of the 10 laptops returned).
- Write the correction reason — ZATCA requires it.
- Press Save & issue.
The note is linked to the original invoice, sent to ZATCA like an invoice (clearance or reporting), and lowers the customer's balance.
If the customer already paid
- The credit note amount stays as a customer credit and is applied to their next invoices when you record their receipts.
- If you pay the money back by bank transfer: record it with a journal entry under Accounting → Journal entries (debit the customer in accounts receivable, credit the bank account); your accountant can help.
Cancel a whole invoice?
Create a credit note for all lines and the full amount. Void is only available when ZATCA has not cleared or recorded the invoice (for example a rejected one), it has no payments, and you have the permission.
Where are the notes?
Under Sales → Credit notes and Debit notes, and in the Related documents section of the original invoice.
